Many moons ago, I was on assignment for a photography shoot in Mastigouche Wildlife Reserve. We were staying in a wooden cabin deep in the forest. That night, I left my camera outside, hoping to capture the cabin beneath a star-filled sky.

The next day, while I was reviewing the footage I had captured, something peculiar caught my eye. Late into the night, something or someone was lurking near the cabin.

At first, it looked like a shadow passing in front of the camera:

Later in the sequence, the intruder finally revealed itself.

Now that we can rule out the paranormal, nearly 30 mammal species roam these parts: wolves, coyotes… maybe even a rare lynx.

Or a suspiciously large groundhog.

Whatever it was, I’m just glad it wasn’t curious enough to investigate my camera.
